What Are the Different Types of Balcony Flooring?

A homeowner's choice of balcony flooring will vary according to the type of balcony that already exists on the house. Some balconies are made of woods that do not require additional covering, though a homeowner may choose to cover the wood for added comfort, resistance to weather damage, and aesthetic value. Concrete balconies are more commonly covered to improve aesthetics, and the options for balcony flooring will vary. Some flooring comes in tiles that can be locked together; these tiles have ridges on their bottoms to allow for ventilation that will prevent water damage.

The options for a concrete balcony are varied. A homeowner may choose to purchase tiles from a supply store to make the balcony flooring more attractive and eye catching. The tiles can be laid in various patterns, and the color and design options are quite varied. Tiles are not very difficult to install, and they will improve the aesthetic of the balcony flooring immediately. One downside to tiles, however, is the fact that they will be difficult to pry up should the homeowner need to remove them for any reason. Smaller balcony spaces will not require a large amount of tiles, but tearing up any tiles, especially from concrete, can be a difficult job.

All-weather balcony flooring usually comes in the form of pre-cut tiles that do not need to be glued or adhered to the balcony subfloor. These tiles are interlocking, durable, and attractive. They are often made from synthetic materials such as plastic or vinyl, and they will sometimes mimic the look of natural wood for a more pleasing aesthetic. Some may even feature real wood, though these will be more expensive, as woods that are resistant to water damage will have to be used. These woods tend to be more expensive than other woods. The gaps on the bottom of the tiles will allow water to evaporate more quickly, preventing damage to the subfloor and the tiles.

Of course, using an outdoor carpet on the balcony space is an easy and cost-effective way to improve the look and function of the balcony. These carpets are water-resistant, and they are usually made from synthetic materials that can be cleaned easily. They are the least expensive option for balcony flooring, and they will immediately improve the look and function of the balcony space. These are ideal for small balconies that the homeowner does not want to invest a lot of money into renovating.

You forget about rubber balcony flooring. Rubber balcony and terrace tiles are very popular now.

What you're going with will probably depend on how much work you're having done, but if you're having the balcony replaced (or maybe even if you're just having it renovated--I've never had a balcony done), you might want to think about doing stamped concrete as a balcony floor covering. Concrete doesn't have to be flat and gray--it can be made to look like stone or tile. Then you have attractiveness and durability and don't have to worry about having something on top of the concrete.
